Ministering to the Poor:
One Person at a Time
By Grant Edwards

fellowship    I recently visited General Santos City in the southern Philippines.  My sister, Kristie, has a ministry in General Santos working with the poorest of the poor. With me were Rick Ives, Derrick Young, and my wife Barbara.
The first night we were there my sister organized a program presented by the school children supported by members of Fellowship.  Toward the end of the program a group of five high school aged girls sang a song - it was nicely done with great harmony.  During the song Kristie leaned over to me and said, "Grant, these girls showed up at our ministry compound yesterday, having heard some Americans were coming, they learned this song hoping someone who would be convicted to pay for them to attend high school."  Of course, I and the other Americans were the ones that the girls were hoping to be convicted.
My initial response was negative, even though I learned from my sister that it cost only $100 per student to send the girls to high school - yes, only $500 for five girls to go to high school - but a fortune for the parents of the girls since they make only about $2 per day in wages.  Even with the low cost, my thoughts, when asked to help were, "What difference would it make? There are thousands of kids just in this area that need money for school.  I can't help them all."
Then the Lord spoke to me and said, "Yes, but of the thousands who need money for school only five are asking you!"  I then experienced what some would call "conviction".  Too often I (and probably you as well) allow the enormity of the need to keep us from doing anything at all.  We aren't responsible for the world's problems; only to obey and help those who are asking us!
I have been re-memorizing the Sermon on the Mount lately.  And recently Matthew 6:42 spoke to me in a new way, "Give to him who asks of you ... "

When presenting vision and new driection to Fellowship, it is easy to overdo it a bit. But I can't help myself!
